This homeowner in Darien wanted to completely enhance the home from top to bottom, updating the roofing and siding simultaneously to provide a fresh new look. One of the advantages of having the old roofing system stripped away before installing the new material is that any irregularity under the old shingles will be revealed. In a perfect scenario, the roof decking, which is usually 1/2-in. plywood will be intact and in great condition, which means it can protect the home for decades, potentially. Unfortunately, with this project, once the old roof was torn off, it was revealed that the decking was only ⅜-in. material, which had to be replaced to meet code requirements. While that added to the expense, there is value in having completely new decking protecting the home and providing a solid foundation for the new roof material.
